  • The estate of slain San Francisco Bay Area subway passenger Oscar Grant, III filed a $25 million claim against the Bay Area Rapid Transit ('BART') District, the subway authority whose police officer shot and killed the young 22-year-old father in the back at an Oakland, California subway station on New Years Day.

According to the legal claim filed by John Burris, the lawyer representing Grant's estate, BART Officer Johannes Mehserle shot and killed the unarmed Grant in the back after the subway passenger "appeal[ed] to the Officer's sense of humanity, telling the Officer that he had a four year-old daughter."
