UN patent filings dropped for 1st time since 1978
GENEVA (AP) - The number of international patent filings dropped last year for the first time since 1978 as companies hit by the global economic downturn sought fewer new protections on their intellectual property, the U.N. said Monday.

Springsteen sues NYC bar over royalties
NEW YORK (AP) - Bruce Springsteen is suing a Manhattan pub, saying it failed to pay an annual licensing fee to an organization that distributes royalty payments to artists. Springsteen claims the pub violated his copyrights by letting an unidentified band perform two of his songs for profit.

Court says '80s hit `Down Under' copies kids' song
SYDNEY (AP) - Australian band Men at Work copied a well-known children's campfire song for the flute melody in its 1980s hit "Down Under" and owes the owner years of royalties, a court ruled Thursday.

HP launches digital music venture in Europe
LONDON (AP) - Hewlett-Packard Co. said Monday it was partnering with U.K. mobile music startup Omnifone Ltd. to launch a subscription music service on its personal computers in Europe, moving into a market dominated by Apple Inc.'s iTunes.

Microsoft backs AT&T, sues TiVo over TV technology
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Microsoft is backing AT&T in a patent lawsuit that TiVo has filed against the phone company. Microsoft's tactic: Filing a lawsuit of its own against TiVo.
