Many ills found at Chicago jail, nation's biggest
By MIKE ROBINSON Associated Press Writer CHICAGO (AP) - A federal investigation of the nation's largest single-site county jail has uncovered serious sanitation and medical care problems, as well as violence against prisoners who clashed with guards or failed to follow commands, officials said Thursday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - When Michael Richards stunned a nightclub audience two years ago by shouting the N-word at a black patron, Laugh Factory owner Jamie Masada was quick to join the Rev. Jesse Jackson in calling for a ban on the word's use.

DC residents can start applying for gun permits
WASHINGTON (AP) - Police in the District of Columbia are set to begin registering residents for handguns Thursday now that the district's 32-year-old ban has been lifted. Besides obtaining paperwork to buy new handguns, residents also can register firearms they've had illegally under a 180-day amnesty period.

Judge rules Missouri executions constitutional
By CHERYL WITTENAUER Associated Press Writer ST. LOUIS (AP) - A federal judge in Missouri has ruled that the state's method of executing condemned prisoners by injection is constitutional. U.S. District Judge Fernando Gaitan in Kansas City made the ruling late Tuesday. Two years ago he issued a moratorium on executions in Missouri.

Suit: New Wiretapping Law Illegally Broadens Spying Activity
